Every painting is classified twice — once by subject, what it shows, and once by manner, how it is painted. Most works appear under both, so a realist landscape can be found either way.

By subject

What the painting shows.

By manner

How it is painted — the tradition or approach the artist works in.

By form

Works that are not paintings.
