Lkhagvadorj Mijid

Lkhagvadorj Mijid is the senior voice of the collection. Trained at the Pedagogical College (1963) and the State Pedagogical Institute (1967) in Ulaanbaatar, he worked as an artist for the UMA branch in Bulgan aimag, then for the State Philharmonic, before turning freelance in 1991 — a career that spans the socialist era and everything after.

His paintings return again and again to the life of the steppe: sheep and herdsmen, families moving by camel, gers under coloured mountains — rendered with a folk directness that is instantly his own. The collection holds a cohesive suite of steppe works, all painted in 2006, that reads almost as a single portrait of Mongolian nomadic life across the seasons. His work has been shown across Russia, Japan, Hong Kong, Holland and France, with one-man shows in Ulaanbaatar and Niigata, Japan.
