Chimeddorj Shagdarjav (b. 1954) is among the most decorated Mongolian artists of his generation, a recipient of the Altan Gadas (Polar Star) Order conferred by the Mongolian government. He graduated from the State Pedagogical Institute in Ulaanbaatar in 1984, has been a member of the Union of Mongolian Artists since 1985 and joined its board of directors in 2002.
He works in two registers: hundreds of fast, free-flowing ink drawings on rice paper — horses and portraits in straight lines and quick curves — and large canvases where broad planes of colour and the ‘turning’ perspective of traditional Mongolian painting hold the steppe and sky together. His work has been shown from Moscow and Paris to San Francisco, Tokyo and London.
